Cuil, sadly, is not a search engine that I would use. But, it is very gimmicky and can prove to be useful if explored. Firstly, Cuil uses it's directory in a whole new way. It has links to other websites right on the "other suggestions" tab coming out from the main page. For instance, if you were to type in the letter "P", the suggestion at the top would be Porsche. If you click the link, it takes you to Porsche's homepage. Very different in comparison to Google, Bing, or Altavista. Just because it has this in it doesn't mean that it's any better than the competition. Bing's homepage has a bunch of pictures on it that give you suggestions on what to search. The homepage for April 26, 2010 shows a building on water with many facts. Cuil, doesn't even come close. It's a blank webpage that has absolutely nothing on it. But the effect it gives is pretty good in my opinion. Another upside to Cuil is that their webpage is completely black. This means that it saves energy in comparison to the other search engine. A black webpage uses up less energy on the screen as it has to project a darker color rather that a light one. Google, Bing, and AltaVista projects a white webpage which is, indeed, a light color. One of the reasons why Cuil isn't one of the top search engines is because the website was launched on July 28, 2008. Roughly, two years ago. Whereas Google was founded on September 4th, 1998. 10 years before Cuil was launched, and has been running for twelve years. AltaVista's been running since December 15th, 1995, and Live search (now Bing) was launched in late 1998. The competition has a lot more experience than Cuil has. One interesting, but not needed, is their search engine "Scroller". The reason that I use Scroller is because it has to bars (one on the top and one on the bottom) that stay in place when you scroll up or down. Handy indeed. Some new Information that I wanted to add. This is on how some search engines have Stock Quotes. Google has GOOG, Yahoo! has YHOO, Bing is generalized, and has MSFT, and Cuil, surprise surprise, has none. It is a "Private Company".
